The Sewing Labs Offers Community Projects You Can Sew at Home

The Sewing Labs offers the KC community many things including simple sewing projects that you can do at home to benefit others. Here are some of their current community participation projects.

KC Navigation Bag

This project is active throughout the year when there is a need and supplies.  Please contact for available kits to sew  816-888-3051 New Kits available new!

The Sewing Labs has partnered with Volunteer KC to sew the KC Navigation Bags.  In an effort to bridge the resource knowledge gap in Kansas City, Missouri, VKC volunteers designed a professional map full of emergency resources plots for homeless and near-homeless individuals. On the front of the bag is a custom map of Kansas City, MO. The back of the bag has a corresponding resource list for services from free meals, toiletries, and shelters, to medical and pantries.  The Sewing Labs is looking for volunteers to sew the canvas bags from home.  When available we will announce for Kits to be picked up!

Quilt of Many Colors

The Quilt of Many Colors is a community service initiative by The Sewing Labs that invites sewists to use fabric scraps from their personal stash or materials provided by The Sewing Labs to create quilt blocks. These blocks are pieced and quilted together to make lap quilts for low-income senior living centers. Together, these quilts become a collective expression of care and creativity, symbolizing the warmth and support of an entire community.

Fleece Hats & Scarves

Typically spans over the winter months

We’ve launched our annual winter fleece project for the homeless and we need your help!  We are asking volunteers to either come in to cut fleece and prepare kits, or sew fleece hats and scarves from home.  We can see that this winter is going to be a cold one. Let’s band together to support our homeless community!

St. Luke’s Children’s Activity Bags

The Sewing Labs is partnering with St. Luke’s Hospital to create handmade activity bags for children undergoing treatments. These colorful, durable bags are designed to hold toys, games, puzzles, and other comforting items, bringing joy and support to young patients during challenging times. This is our first time partnering with St. Luke’s Hospital, and we are happy to keep sewing for those in need of comfort, joy, and love!

St. Luke’s Walker Bags

The Sewing Labs is partnering with St. Luke’s Hospital to create handmade walker bags for patients to use as they navigate life with a walker. These fun and durable bags are designed to hold phones, keys, book, and other everyday items, bringing independence and freedom to patients. This is our first time partnering with St. Luke’s Hospital, and we are happy to keep sewing for those in need of comfort, joy, and love!
