Sewing Labs

The Sewing Labs (TSL) not only works with individuals facing unemployment, low-income wages, and housing insecurity but also teaches them the in-demand skill of industrial sewing machine operation, providing them with valuable skills and opportunities to thrive within Kansas City’s robust sewing industry.

TSL programming equips individuals with the expertise needed for employment in the sewing industry, helping them achieve financial sustainability and close wage/gender gaps. The Sewing Labs is working to address the barriers our students are facing by providing job skill training to un/under-employed individuals, while strengthening the Kansas City sewing industry.

The Sewing Labs is an education and training provider registered with the United States Department of Labor (DOL) as an apprenticeship host and a related training instructor (RTI). TSL offers The Sewing Salon training program (SSTP) as apprenticeship education model that prepares individuals to enter and succeed in an Industrial Sewing Machine Operator apprenticeship. The Sewing Salon curriculum incorporates best-practice industry-standard approaches approved by the DOL. In August 2022, TSL’s expertise and high-quality programming earned the agency the opportunity to serve as an Apprenticeship Ambassador in the ApprenticeshipUSA program. This honor launched The Sewing Labs and its workforce development program into the public eye, increasing the demand for services.
