Seeding and Potting Event at the KC Farm School at Gibbs Road

The Resilient Activist is excited to join up with the KC Farm School at Gibbs Road for an afternoon with our HANDS IN THE DIRT!

At The Resilient Activist, one of our basic philosophies is that getting back to nature can offer a powerful boost to our emotional well-being. And giving back to nature by nurturing and supporting the Farm School’s mission is a welcome bonus.

About the KC Farm School

The KC Farm School is a nonprofit organization operating 14 urban acres in Kansas City, Kansas. They are a working production and education farm with a mission to empower individuals of all ages, ancestries, and abilities through on-farm, hands-on experiences and vocational education connecting them to the land and soil, food, community, and opportunity. They serve over 10,000 people annually through their food outreach (on-farm farmers market, food donations, and CSA program) and their educational programs which include a community food sovereignty program, field trips, youth apprenticeships, summer camps, volunteer opportunities, community workshops, and events. They work with, rather than for, their community to create a space at the center of the community where people can learn, grow, and connect to each other.

Greenhouse at the KC Farm School at Gibbs Road

Event Description

We will be working in the KC Farm School’s heated greenhouse, so conditions will be generally warm and dry. We will be planting seeds and/or repotting plants for planting on their farm and for their spring plant sales. Please wear comfortable clothing that you don’t mind getting a little dirty and bring gardening gloves if you prefer to work with gloves on. Bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated.

If the weather allows, we will take a tour of their 11-acre Common Ground property located just east of their current farm site. The Master Plan for this property is for gathering and growing space with wild and shared places, and room for orchards, animals, composting, and more. The Farm School recently received a USDA grant to support the implementation of their Master Plan.

Our Vision

It is the KC Farm School‘s goal for this event to provide a nature-connected experience for The Resilient Activist community by offering participants a hands-on activity planting seeds and nurturing young seedlings. It is also an opportunity for The Resilient Activist’s participants to gain valuable insights and hope from the KC Farm School’s amazing work in the community.

Through collaborating with like-minded organizations, we further our vision for current and future generations to live in a healthy, diverse, and regenerative environment.

Ages: 7+ with continual parental supervision. Staff and volunteers are not able to assist children at this event and will rely on parents to work with their own children.
