Public Hearing Best Hope for Compost Collective in Kansas City

By now most of us know that our food systems are right up there with transporation as the major producers of greenhouse gases causing global warming. A big part of this is food waste. Food waste ends up in landfills where it turns into methane, one of the most destructive greenhouse gases. Composting is an obvious, time-proven, and easy solution to sustainably convert food waste into nutrient-rich soil. And, for those who do not have the space to compost, compost collectives provide commercial-scale solutions. These benefit the entire community by reducing global warming and they provide a steady stream of nutrients to organic farms.

Composting Bins

For some time, the Compost Collective KC has been gathering your food wastes and transporting them to Urbavore Farm. There, they are sustainably converted to compost used on Urbavore Farm to grow food and both are distributed throughout the community. All facilities were originally approved by City of Kansas City but are now threatened by zoning adjustments requested by neighboring properties. A hearing has been scheduled by the KC Board of Zoning Adjustment to determine whether to in-effect shut down both the Compost Collective KC and the Urbavore Farm.

If you are concerned about global warming, local food sources and the importance of composting to our food systems, please inform yourself on this issue and make your opinions known by attending our January 9th public hearing, or writing a letter of support to the KC Board of Zoning Adjustment.
