We are sharing some facts and strategies for giving a sustainable gift that will not end up in the landfill. Did you know that the 30-45 days between American Thanksgiving and the New Year is responsible for an extra 25 million tons of garbage? This is the equivalent of 125,000 blue whales.
Two other interesting facts: one-third of people admit to sending unwanted gifts to landfill and retailers send 25% of return products to landfill. It appears that landfills are very busy during this time of year handling all of our disappointments.
What makes a gift sustainable?
It is more than wrapping it in recycled paper. The best way to find a sustainable gift is to think about the recipient. Here are some questions to get you started.
- How will they use the gift?
- Can you buy it second hand?
- Could the gift be an experience or a service or a consumable?
- Can it be the gift of your time?
- And if they don’t like it, how can you help prevent it from ending up in landfill?
