UN’s COP28 Climate Newsletter: COP28 Ends With ‘Transition Away’ From Fossil Fuels


The latest edition of the annual UN climate conference took place in Dubai – the largest city in the United Arab Emirates – from 30 November through 13 December, running over by one day. A COP28 draft outcome text released to negotiators in Dubai Monday evening dropped a call to ‘phaseout’ fossil fuels, prompting an outcry from climate vulnerable countries and civil society. The United States, European Union countries, and a group of small island developing States joined a chorus of civil society groups denouncing the draft as not going far enough to curb global warming.
