Paddling for Stewardship: Kayaking the Blue River

This past Saturday, nine Green Guard Environmental Stewards and over 60 community members made quite a splash during a FREE guided kayaking experience along the Blue River Parkway. Launching from the Brown Athletic Field Boat Ramp—the only official access point for paddlers on the Blue River we floated and explored one of Kansas City’s most historic and ecologically significant waterways.

The Blue River stretches over 40 miles, weaving through forests, parks, and neighborhoods before joining the Missouri River. Once a major trade route and now an important urban wildlife corridor, the Blue River offers a unique perspective on both the natural and cultural landscapes of our city.
In honor of Water Safety Month, participants also practiced essential kayaking and water safety skills, learning how to navigate the river responsibly and respectfully. This event was more than a recreational outing, it was an opportunity to build environmental stewardship, promote access to nature, and celebrate the hidden beauty of Kansas City’s Blue River.
Thank you to everyone who joined us for a meaningful day on the water! We’re especially grateful to Paradise Outfitters for providing the kayaks, Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s Outdoor Fund for generously funding them, and Jackson County Parks + Rec for the use of the boat ramp and their continued support of our Blue River Nature Guide (BRiNG) program. Partnership helps make experiences like this possible.
