Community Sewing Day at The Sewing Labs

Volunteers are needed on Friday, August 28, between 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. to spend a few hours sewing, chatting, and creating together, making items that will be shared with neighbors across our community. Join us at The Sewing Labs (526 Campbell St. Kansas City, MO 64106). Be ready for a hands-on day of sewing and assembling items that will go directly to local partners, including Volunteer KC, Shawnee Parc and St. Luke’s.

The Sewing Labs’ mission is to be an inclusive and welcoming community teaching the legacy of sewing for employment, entrepreneurship, and enrichment.

What to expect:

This is a relaxed, come-as-you-are kind of day. You can stay for the whole time or drop in for a bit. You’ll leave knowing exactly who your work is helping and how it will be used.

We’ll be working together on lap quilts, walker bags, kids’ activity bags, and pillowcases. Some projects will involve sewing, and others will be simple kit assembly, so there’s a place for everyone to jump in. Whether you’ve never touched a sewing machine or you sew every day, you are welcome here.

Bring yourself, and if you have one, feel free to bring your sewing machine. All materials and guidance will be provided, and there’s no cost to attend.

Volunteer opportunities include:

  • kit assembly,
  • sewing support,
  • organizational aid,
  • material distribution
  • additional opportunities.
