UN Chief Returns To COP27 To Press For Action With Time Running Out To Agree On Final Decision

On ‘Solutions Day’ at COP27, the UN Secretary-General told negotiators that there is an exit ramp off the highway to climate hell: action and renewable energy. António Guterres is back in Sharm el-Sheikh to support the COP27 Egyptian Presidency and give a final push to country delegates that are still struggling to agree on many crucial items on the agenda, and the final cover decision — the political declaration that is (at least most of the time) approved by the end of each UN Climate Conference. Many negotiations observers from civil society organizations have noted that not even half of the agenda items for this year have been cleared, and that there is still a long way to go to hash out the (currently) 20-page draft text of the political declaration. While of course, nothing is a foregone conclusion, there is now a high chance that negotiations will spill over the deadline, which is less than 24 hours away.
