In this interview, Todd Miller, the author of Storming the Wall: Climate Change, Migration, and Homeland Security, observes that border militarization is an implicit acknowledgement, rather than a denial, of climate change. This is because a significant part of today’s border militarization exists in a context which goes beyond today or the immediate present, but rather anticipates future events, which could include mass displacements of people due to climate change challenges. Money intended to rebuild places struck by climate-related weather disasters could be diverted for increased border militarization.
