The Green New Deal, is a call to mobilize the federal government to tackle the threat of climate change. This effort is led by the young organizers of the Sunrise Movement. The campaign received a boost from Congresswoman-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and is now backed by more than 14 representatives.
As reported by Naomi Klein (Nov. 27, 2018) in the Intercept (https://theintercept.com/2018/11/27/green-new-deal-congress-climate-change/): The plan calls upon the House to create the Select Committee for a Green New Deal, which would be fully funded and empowered to draft legislation that would provide a “detailed national, industrial, economic mobilization plan” capable of making the U.S. economy “carbon neutral” at the same time promote “economic and environmental justice and equality.” The discussion of the proposal over the next year would include a range of experts, from scientists to local lawmakers to labor unions to business leaders. The plan will be released by January of 2020; two months later draft legislation is scheduled to turn the Green New Deal into a reality.
