Addressing an audience question Former U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz responds by pointing to the example of Greta Thunberg. The need to hold leaders accountable should lead to coalition building, according to Moniz, of the sort that mobilized 20 million Americans around the first Earth Day in 1970. This movement goaded politicians of both stripes to support such initiatives as the National Environmental Protection Act, the Clean Water Act, the Clean Air Act, the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency. Moniz finds that a difference between 1970 and today is the level of public concern recognizing that something has to be done is incommensurate with the level of political accountability.
