Join us for the 11th Annual MLK Jr. Nature Walk and Keynote Address on Monday, January 20th from 9am to 12pm. This event offers a unique opportunity to honor Dr. King’s legacy while exploring local Black history through an environmental justice lens while strolling along Brush Creek from MLK, Jr. Park to the Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Center.
Here’s what you can expect:
- Nature walk: Led by local experts, this 1.5 mile walk will use an environmental justice lens to explore the Black history of the Brush Creek and broader Kansas City area, starting at the “15th and Mahomies” playground at Martin Luther King Jr. Square Park and concluding at the Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Center.
- Engaging speaker program: At the Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Center following the nature walks, Schylon Kubis will provide an open plenary presenting the final designs for the MLK, Jr. Pedestrian Bridge and Bruce R. Watkins Connector Community Park projects. Glenn North from the Kansas City Museum will deliver an inspiring keynote address. Light refreshments and music will be provided at the Cultural Center.
This event is FREE and open to the public, and participants can join both elements or whichever they choose. More information can be found on our event webpage, along with registration details, which is strongly encouraged for planning purposes and communication if there is inclement weather.
