Each year we gather our partners and the Kansas City community for a walk that elicits listening, reflecting, and honoring the words of Dr. King. His words resonate with us today and we use a walk to highlight them because for many, nature is a place of peacefulness, awe, and inspiration. We hope the walk can be restorative and provide a serene tradition for Kansas Citians.
Join us for the 2024 MLK Jr. Nature Walk on Monday, January 15th, 2024 from
9:30am – 1:00pm. Hosted by Heartland Conservation Alliance, KC Parks & Rec. Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Heritage Center & MO State Parks. This event is free and open to all. RSVP here: https://www.classy.org/event/dr-martin-luther-king-jr-nature-walk/e539546/register/new/select-tickets.
Spend time outside. Pay attention to the details of nature and consider the ways humans and nature are connected, and how the Blue River is an asset to the community. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a man dedicated to service and it is our duty to follow his guidance and be of service to nature. It is through service to nature and others we can create a healthier future for all.
The MLK Jr. Nature Walk is in person and will follow a paved path beginning at the “15 and the Mahomies” Playground at Martin Luther King Jr. Square Park and will conclude at the Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Center. At the Cultural Center, participants are invited to enjoy light refreshments and hear from local community leaders about their insights on environmental justice. All are welcome to attend either the walk, the presentation, or both.
Please dress for the weather and wear comfortable walking shoes. This event will take place rain or shine. Furry friends are welcome on the walk portion of the event but are not allowed inside of the Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Center.
Parking is available at Martin Luther King Jr. Square Park. Agenda USA will provide a shuttle for participants to use to return to their cars at the end of the event. The shuttle will run 11:30am – 1:30pm. For further details see this website.
