PREP-KC is an education nonprofit focused on ensuring students attending the region’s urban schools have equal access to learning opportunities that result in meaningful careers to ignite the potential in all students. Our work focuses on increasing access to high-quality educational and career-connected learning experiences, to close the opportunity gaps that exist for students attending schools in communities that have faced longstanding barriers. We bring volunteers into the schools to talk about their college & career journey, facilitate virtual conversations to help primarily elementary students understand the real world relevance of topics they are discussing in their classroom, get students out to offsite visits related to their interests, and build immersive opportunities in our high schools to support students earning a Market Value Asset (for example an Industry Recognized Credential, college credit, or an immersive project or internship) in a career that interests them.
Our greatest need for volunteers is on our virtual platform, prepk where our district coordinators make requests for volunteers to talk about a variety of topics related to environment/ plant sciences, climate, and other related topics so students can see the real-world application of what they are learning. During the 2024-25 school year, almost 700 teachers were actively engaged on the virtual platform and our goal is to connect them with local volunteers to get excited about local efforts related to the environment and hopefully identify ways they can get involved beyond the virtual sessions.
