Cultivate Kansas City is a locally-grown nonprofit working to grow food, farms, and community in support of an equitable, sustainable and healthy local food system for all.
The organization strengthens the KC area food system and increases economic and environmental stability by providing programs that:
• Increase the capacity of area farmers to produce fresh fruits and vegetables utilizing climate resilient and regenerative growing practices.
• Connect the community to the health, social, and environmental benefits of local food and farms.
• Help low-income individuals afford and access locally grown fruits and vegetables.
Cultivate KC grows food: The organization manages multiple farms in the region including the 9-acre Juniper Gardens Training Farm in Kansas City, KS. Cultivate has also developed Westport Commons Farm, a 1.25-acre farm in Kansas City, MO, into an educational and resource hub and a source for fresh produce for neighbors and non-profits.
Cultivate KC grows farms and food projects: In partnership with Catholic Charities of NE Kansas, Cultivate KC operates New Roots, a farm business incubation program headquartered at Juniper Gardens Training Farm. The program works with farmers from the refugee community who are growing their own farm businesses while feeding their communities.
The Metro Farms & Food Systems program assists in the development of urban farms and community food projects through technical assistance, growers network development, collaborative projects, and policy/systems change. Cultivate KC administers Get Farming Mini Grants to area farmers to expand production capacity and increase availability of local produce.
Cultivate KC helps low-income families buy fresh fruits and vegetables: Our Food Access program provides SNAP and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) shoppers with a dollar-to-dollar match to buy produce at farmers markets. Additional programs donate produce grown at our farms to food pantries and senior centers. In partnership with Dotte Local Grocer, Cultivate KC will also soon be re-launching the Dotte Mobile Grocer, a full-service grocery store on wheels in eastern Wyandotte County.
