Celebrating Local Produce + Partnerships: Our Thanksgiving Holiday Box Distribution

Over the past several years, the Food Access team has used the remaining funds from our Senior Market Match program to distribute Thanksgiving produce boxes to senior community members in the Kansas City metro area, and this year was no exception! We are grateful to Village Presbyterian Church and The Menorah Heritage Foundation for their continued support and funding of the Senior Market Match program.

This November, the Food Access team partnered with the Kansas City Food Hub to source locally grown produce that highlighted the abundance of the season from the following farms: Green Gate Family FarmHappy Hollow FarmJet Produce and MeatsMellowfields Farm, and South Baldwin Farms. It was a pleasure working with the Kansas City Food Hub team to assemble 90 Thanksgiving produce boxes, each filled with apples, arugula, carrots, yellow onions, white potatoes, and sweet potatoes. Our goal was to offer a colorful variety of fresh fruit and veggies, and we’re thankful to the local farmers who made that possible!

We want to share our sincere gratitude with Cosentino’s Price ChopperTippin’s Pies, and McLain’s Bakery + Market for their generous donations to our Thanksgiving holiday distribution. Through the kindness of these local businesses, we were able to include cranberry sauce, dinner rolls, pies, and sweet treats with each local produce box delivered to our senior community members at Don Boscoe Senior Center and The Shepherd’s Center of KCK. We also share our thanks with the Kansas City Food Hub crew who joined the Food Access team for deliveries to both senior centers during the week of Thanksgiving.

Following our deliveries, the Food Access team received this heartfelt note from one of our community partners, “I am so grateful to be in a community filled with individuals like yourself who do so much good. Thank you for sharing the joy and hope of the season! It is such a gift to witness.” Our team will carry this sentiment into the new year as we continue to support programming that fosters an equitable and inclusive food system.
