Kansas Citians are mobilizing to shut down Kansas City’s last coal plant, Evergy’s Hawthorn plant. Be part of this movement! Join KC residents next Saturday as we launch a historic community deep canvassing campaign to empower our neighbors and close Hawthorn for good. Evergy has refused KC’s demand the plant be closed, and only by banding together as residents can we stop it and make KC’s goals for clean air for all a reality. The Hawthorn plant in Kansas City is hurting our community, and Evergy’s refusal to close it has left residents feeling powerless. But we won a Climate Protection Plan despite Evergy’s opposition just last year. By meeting with our neighbors and building solidarity, we will kick coal out of KC and show Evergy our communities will not be ignored.

Volunteers in KC’s climate justice movement are meeting on Saturday, October 7 at 10am to talk with Kansas Citians living closest to Hawthorn, voices Evergy has ignored. After a team training, we will meet our neighbors at their homes to hear their stories and invite them to join in conversations with neighbors about closing it and making sure our city listens to people, not polluters. We will close with a short team debrief because we value everyone’s feedback. Food will be provided, and the entire event will go from 10am to about 2:30pm.
The Hawthorn coal plant, located in the historic northeast of KC, contributes to five premature deaths and over 50 asthma attacks in Kansas City every single year. Evergy knows it can save customers money and protect their health by ditching fossil fuels and transitioning to renewable energy, but it has refused. But after over two years of advocacy by residents across the metro area, the City of Kansas City formally called on Evergy to shutter this environmental injustice by 2025. Now we are launching this deep canvassing campaign to build the movement to close this dirty coal plant and put KC on the right track.
