Microbes Always and Everywhere

We are presenting our play, Microbes Always and Everywhere, September 20 at KC Farm School 4223 Gibbs Rd, KCKS. Please consider participating as an individual or group in our Fall Production.

The play arose from our work growing microbes to rebalance our degraded soil, so our soils would reach their potential in producing healthy food while sequestering carbon and increasing the water holding capacity of the soil.

The teamwork between microbes, plants, and animals created the prairies, woodlands, and other ecological niches that played an important role in regulating the temperature of the planet. When we figure water into the equation there is much to be said about the importance of restoring ecosystems starting with the soil and its water holding capacity.

The communication between the germinating seed and the soil microbes points out the ability of microbes to communicate, cooperate and work together. It’s called quorum sensing. Pseudomonas and Rizobacter bacteria use quorum sensing to form a biofilm that help the emerging seedling retain water and protect against pathogens.

Heartland All Species Project has built 70 Johnson-Su composters which facilitates the growth of fungi over bacteria. The microbes grown are used to inoculate seeds to increase the soil carbon sponge that sequesters carbon and holds water. We build them for groups and educate about the intelligence and cooperation that life engages in. The microbes support of all life. It’s a worth while example that people can see for cooperation and for the power of diversity. We also operate Tracy Garden, a community garden where we use techniques which mitigate climate change.

Last winter we teamed up with Flying Heart Theater to create a giant puppet play to encourage understanding of soil and nature in general and how it works. We need creative minds with greater understanding and intuitive capacity to solve current problems. Perhaps humans can learn our own form of quorum sensing and work together.
