Unpacking The Plastics Pandemic
Plastics Are Everywhere!
One moment we’re revolutionizing the future and the next we’re swimming in a forever land of nondegradable microplastics and the cornucopia of toxic forever chemicals used to make them. It’s on the ground and in our oceans. It’s in the air, in our food and in our water. It’s in our guts, lungs, and blood streams. We breath it. We drink it. We eat it and we wear it.
Next to climate change, plastics are now the single largest threat to our well-being. Studies show that plastics and their chemical additives are responsible for ADHD, obesity, Alzheimer’s, dementia, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, birth defects, developmental damage to infants, impaired functioning of the liver, kidneys, and immune system, and a wide range of cancers.
How do you take action against this ever growing cloud of microplastics and sea of toxic chemical additives? The minimum defense is to turn your plastics upside down and look at the resin codes. Know the limitations of each code and follow the rules. Seriously. Don’t heat food in or reuse plastics that aren’t designed for that. It’s hard enough to believe a corporation when they say something good about their product. If they’re saying, “WARNING: DO NOT MICROWAVE,” you better believe it.
A better defense is to start removing plastic from your life. There are simple, effective ways to reduce plastics in your home and lower your contact with toxins. Actions that let you live a healthier life while helping the planet.
