One in ten people on the planet now live in a place that’s declared a “climate emergency.” A rapidly changing climate drove hundreds of governments around the world to declare states of emergency in 2019. While the declarations are largely symbolic gestures, they have in some cases become jumping-off points for real action. Sixty-eight cities, towns, and counties have issued their own emergencies in the US. Sixty of those were made in 2019.
