Achieving a global goal to grow and conserve a trillion trees as part of the fight against climate change—a goal that got a boost when the World Economic Forum launched a new program in January, called 1t.org, to catalyze and coordinate action. Even Donald Trump said that he wanted to sign onto the campaign. Last week, Republican lawmakers proposed that the U.S. should plant a trillion trees by 2050. Some scientists have argued that mass tree-planting and conservation is a dangerous diversion if it means that countries aren’t steeply reducing emissions from fossil fuels, the biggest lever in addressing the problem.
