Kansas City Missouri

The Office of Environmental Quality (OEQ) is the City of Kansas City, Missouri’s lead agency for environmental compliance and sustainability initiatives. The department reflects Kansas City’s long-standing commitment to sustainability as a core principle of city operations. The City embraces a triple-bottom-line approach to decision-making that balances social equity, economic vitality, and environmental stewardship.

The OEQ ensures compliance with local, state, and federal environmental regulations while advancing broader efforts to protect our air, water, and land. The office also leads the implementation of the Climate Protection and Resiliency Plan (CPRP), which guides Kansas City’s work in energy efficiency, clean transportation, sustainable development, climate adaptation, and waste reduction.

Cities like Kansas City play a central role in shaping whether urban growth is equitable and sustainable. By investing in renewable energy, resource efficiency, compact design, green spaces, building retrofits, accessible public transit, and improved recycling systems, cities can thrive while staying within ecological limits.

Kansas City has made consistent progress toward these goals and continues to explore innovative and collaborative ways to build a more resilient future. The OEQ sustainability team is here to help residents, businesses, and city departments take action.
